Reminder - First Empirical Software Engineering Workshop at ISEC 2010

(REMINDER – Please submit your papers by sending them via mail to any one of the workshop organizers. For details, please see below.) The objective of the Empirical Software Engineering (ESE) workshop is to provide a forum where researchers and practitioners can report and discuss the state of the art in empirical software engineering. The workshop will focus on all aspects of ESE, including efficacy of software engineering methods and technologies; design and structure of empirical studies; and results of empirical studies. In particular, we invite results of empirical studies in IT services organizations. For an understanding of the state-of-the-art in empirical software engineering, as well as the context of the results we are interested in, the following resources may be referred to: Empirical Software Engineering: An International Journal http://www.springer.com/computer/programming/journal/10664 Experimental Software Engineering Group (ESEG) http://www.cs.umd.edu/projects/SoftEng/tame/ The scope of this workshop includes, but is not restricted to, the following: • Mining data from software repositories • Empirical studies of software processes and products • Evaluation and comparison of techniques and models • Reports on the benefits derived from using certain technologies • Empirically-based decision making • Development of predictive models • Replication of empirical studies • Industrial experience in process improvement • Quality measurement and assurance • Evidence-based software engineering • Infrastructures and novel techniques for conducting empirical/experimental studies • Effort and cost estimation, defect rate and reliability prediction • Object-oriented metrics and analysis for design quality Papers describing unpublished, original work are solicited on any software engineering topic, as long as there is a strong empirical/experimental component to the work being presented. Such contribution can take the form of a case/field study, controlled experiment, survey, meta-analysis of previous studies, enhancement of empirical/experimental methods or critical review of previous empirical work (e.g. from a methodological standpoint). In a manner similar to that followed in social science conferences, each accepted paper presentation will be assigned a discussant, who will present their critique of the paper after the presentation, followed by a 5-minute discussion. The total presentation time for each paper will therefore be 30 minutes, which will include 10 minutes for discussant’s critique and discussion. All papers must be submitted through the web-based submission system in PDF format. The link will be published at the conference's home page (see link above). Papers are limited to 10 pages, must be written in English, and be formatted according to the ACM Authoring Guidelines (http://www.acm.org/sigs/publications/proceedings-templates). Papers which either exceed 10 pages, are outside the scope of the workshop, or do not follow the formatting guidelines will be rejected without review. Pal, PriceWaterhouseCoopers India, New Delhi Kay Berkling, Inline, Internet Online GmbH, Karlsruhe, Germany Potential Participants Based on our interactions with potential participants, we expect attendance from about 40-50 participants from the Indian IT industry. The profiles of the participants will be primarily those who are interested in process and productivity improvement programs within their respective organizations. This would typically include staff from groups such as SEPG, Quality, Testing, as well as those in management and equivalent leadership positions. In particular, the latter group of people would be involved in making investment decisions related to process & productivity improvement, and in evaluating the return on their investment. Expected number of attendees & length of the workshop • As stated above, we expect about 40-50 attendees to the workshop • We expect the workshop to be of half-day duration, with the following tentative program outline: o Keynote address by distinguished speaker – 45 mins o Five paper presentations, each lasting 30 mins – total of 2.5 hours o Panel session on Future Research Challenges in Empirical Software Engineering – 30 mins Description of Plans for Publicity We will prepare workshop flyers and posters and distribute them throughout the Indian and international IT organizations. We will also publicize the workshop extensively via personal contacts with our colleagues in these organizations. URL of Workshop web site - http://ncnaren.googlepages.com/eseworkshopatisec2010
