Peter Chen Award and ER Fellows Announcement

As a result of the ER 2009 edition hold in Gramado, Brazil, let me make two announcements on behalf of the ER Institute and the ER Steering Commitee: i) Initiated in 2008, the Peter P. Chen award honors one person each year for his or her outstanding contributions to the field of conceptual modeling. The selection process is done according to four basic criteria: Research: how well the nominee has helped advance the field of conceptual modeling with his/her intellectual contributions. Service: participation in the organization of conceptual-modeling-related meetings and conferences and participation in editorial boards of conceptual-modeling-related journals. Education: how effectively the nominee has mentored doctoral students in conceptual modeling and produced researchers from their labs and also helped mentor other young people in the field. Contribution to practice: the extent to which the nominee has contributed to technology transfer, commercialization, and industrial projects. International reputation: the extent to which the nominee's work is visible to and has diffused into the international community. In its second edition, the 2009 Peter Chen Award went unanimously to: Prof. David W. Embley, BYU, Provo, Utah, USA. Based on the quoted criteria, this is a recognition to his high reputation in the database community as well as in the MIS community, his well- known and respected book on conceptual modelling, his outstanding research results (visible in his DBLP record, as well as his h-index and g-index), his continous support to the ER conferences in various ways, and his very active role in guiding a large number of students, who also contributed to the development of the Conceptual Modeling community and research area. ii) The ER Fellows Award has been established, as an honor in recognition of the contributions of the selected individual to the ER and Conceptual Modeling field in research and service. The ER Fellows recipients for this year were: Prof. Peter P. Chen, Louisiana State University, LA, USA Prof. Stefano Spaccapietra, Swiss Federal Institute of Technology, Lausanne, Switzerland Prof. Bernhard Thalheim, University of Kiel, Germany Prof. Tok Wang Ling, National University of Singapure, Singapure Prof. David W. Embley, BYU, Provo, Utah, USA. Prof. Sudha Ram, University of Arizona, Tucson, AZ To ensure oversight and continuity of the award, nominations are solicited for 2010 from the field, that will be voted upon by the current ER fellows. Nominations can be sent to the ER SC Chair at opastor@dsic.upv.es, that will communicate them to the current ER Fellows, who will manage which additional ER Fellows are accepted.
