SQL Server R&D Job Opening - Program Manager

Job Description Title: Program Manager Unit: SQL Server, Core Relational DBMS, Research & Development Hiring Manager: Dr. Eric Hanson (ehans@microsoft.com), 425-707-8925 Would you like to have an impact on millions of database users around the world? Do you want to be part of the fastest-growing major database business? Would it appeal to you to work where everywhere you turn you find smart, dedicated, hard-working teammates who are fun to work with and who help you grow? Then read on. The SQL Server Engine core relational database team, which focuses primarily on query processing and storage, has an exciting opportunity for a program manager to help deliver the next version of SQL Server. New development for the next major release of SQL Server is focused on high-scale OLTP, scalable system management and query performance in large data warehouses, and support for the most mission-critical applications, known as “Tier-1” systems. The successful candidate will have the opportunity to work on one or more of these areas depending on their expertise and needs of the SQL Server product unit. In this position, you will work closely with customers, the different component groups in SQL Server, and product management in SQL Server Marketing. You will help define product goals and customer requirements, analyze competing products, design new functionality, write and review functional specifications, coordinate team projects, and prioritize use of resources working with developers, testers, release managers, and documentation writers. Working with the rest of the SQL Server team and our customers, you will ensure that the new features address customer requirements, and match or surpass the competition in terms of performance, functionality, reliability, and ease of use. The applicant should have a database or systems software background, excellent verbal and written communication skills, and leadership and organizational aptitude. We are looking for someone with great teamwork skills, vision, passion and customer focus to successfully deliver the next generation database engine. An MS or higher is preferred; many of our successful candidates in the last few years have PhDs in computer science.
