First Empirical Software Engineering (ESE) Workshop at ISEC 2010

First Empirical Software Engineering (ESE) Workshop at ISEC 2010 Date: TBA (half-day duration, between Feb 25-Feb 27) Venue: Mysore, India Workshop Organizers: Nanjangud C Narendra, IBM Research-India, Bangalore, narendra in.ibm.com Renuka Sindhgatta, IBM Research-India, Bangalore, renuka.sr in.ibm.com Bikram Sengupta, IBM Research-India, Bangalore, bsengupt in.ibm.com Subhajit Datta, Accenture Technology Labs, Bangalore, subhajit.datta gmail.com The objective of the First ESE workshop is to provide a forum where researchers and practitioners can report and discuss the state of the art in ESE. The workshop will focus on all aspects of ESE, such as efficacy of software engineering methods and technologies; design of empirical studies, and results thereof. We are particularly interested in empirical studies in IT services organizations in India and abroad. For an understanding of the state of the art in ESE, as well as the context of the results we are interested in, the following resources may be referred to: Empirical Software Engineering: An International Journal http://www.springer.com/computer/programming/journal/10664 Experimental Software Engineering Group (ESEG) http://www.cs.umd.edu/projects/SoftEng/tame/ The scope of this workshop includes, but is not restricted to, the following: * Mining data from software repositories * Empirical studies of software processes and products * Evaluation and comparison of techniques and models * Reports on the benefits derived from using certain technologies * Empirically-based decision making * Development of predictive models * Replication of empirical studies * Industrial experience in process improvement * Quality measurement and assurance * Evidence-based software engineering * Infrastructures and novel techniques for conducting empirical/experimental studies * Effort and cost estimation, defect rate and reliability prediction * Object-oriented metrics and analysis for design quality Papers describing unpublished, original work are solicited on any software engineering topic, as long as there is a strong empirical/experimental component to the work being presented. Such contribution can take the form of a case/field study, controlled experiment, survey, meta-analysis of previous studies, enhancement of empirical/experimental methods or critical review of previous empirical work (e.g. from a methodological standpoint). In a manner similar to that followed in social science conferences, each accepted paper presentation will be assigned a discussant, who will present their critique of the paper after the presentation, followed by a 5-minute discussion. The total presentation time for each paper will therefore be 30 minutes, which will include 10 minutes for discussant’s critique and discussion. All papers must be submitted via mail to one of the workshop organizers, in Word, PS or PDF format only. Papers are limited to 10 pages, must be written in English, and be formatted according to the ACM Authoring Guidelines (http://www.acm.org/sigs/publications/proceedings-templates). Papers which either exceed 10 pages, are outside the scope of the workshop, or do not follow the formatting guidelines will be rejected without review. Please also note that submitted papers should be original material, i.e., they should not have been submitted, or be under consideration, in any other publication venue (workshop, conference or journal). Accepted papers in the workshop will be collated together in the form of a technical report, copies of which will be distributed to all authors and other participants at the workshop venue. Important Dates: Submission Deadline: January 7th, 2010 Notification of Accepted Papers: Feb 1st, 2010 Submission of Camera-ready Papers: Feb 10th, 2010 Workshop Date: TBA (co-located with ISEC 2010, will be announced later) We expect the workshop to be of half-day duration, consisting of the following program: * Keynote Address by Distinguished Speaker (To Be Announced) * Paper presentations, each lasting 30 mins * Panel session on Future Research Challenges in ESE - 45 mins Program Committee: Karthikeyan Ponnalagu, IBM Research – India, Bangalore Arthur Ryman, IBM Canada, Toronto, Canada Michael Godfrey, University of Waterloo Olga Baysal, University of Waterloo Alan Hartman, IBM Research – India, Bangalore Prof. N.L.
