Introduction
As Service-Oriented Computing (SOC) gains wide acceptance, the need of
understanding its life cycle becomes inevitable, not only for developers,
but also for the users. Just like object-oriented paradigm, in which
software engineering played an important role in describing its software
life cycle and providing fundamental and advanced technologies, SOC has
become a new paradigm which is in demand of software engineering
technologies. The development of service-oriented applications does not only
depend on constructing service providers, but its composition and delivery
must also be considered. Both service requesters and service providers,
along with developers, will benefit from the views and models in a service
life cycle. At present, research has been conducted in both industry and
academia to alleviate issues in the SOC domain, including service discovery,
service composition, and service management. SOC changes the way software
applications are designed, architected, delivered, and consumed, and
supports the development of interoperable, configurable, and evolvable
composite applications. Moreover, it has emerged as a major trend of
computing paradigm in the past few years.
Objective of the Book
Based on software engineering view points, this book uses the concept of
software life cycle to explain SOC from a variety of disciplines including
programming languages, distributed systems, database systems, information
security, and knowledge representation. To provide a clear and consolidated
view for current academic and industrial efforts in SOC, this book features
different phases in the service life cycle to detail extant and promising
methods, tools and technologies along the life cycle of Web services,
including service analysis and design, service provision, service discovery,
service composition, service delivery, as well as service management. The
participants, operations, and standard specifications will be considered and
integrated in these chapters for a comprehensive understanding of SOC.
Target Audience
This book is designed for professionals and researchers working in the field
of service computing, both from theoretical and practical point of views.
The book will also provide insights to the executives responsible for
understanding the technology.
