Large Scale Distributed Information Retrieval

Special Issue on Large-Scale Distributed Systems for Information Retrieval Information Processing & Management Journal by Elsevier GUEST EDITORS * Claudio Lucchese, I.S.T.I.-C.N.R, Italy (claudio.lucchese@isti.cnr.it) * Gleb Skobeltsyn, Google Inc., Switzerland (gleb.skobeltsyn@gmail.com) * Wai Gen Yee, Illinois Institute of Technology, Chicago, USA (yee@iit.edu) IMPORTANT DATES * Submissions of articles: February 1, 2010 * Notification to authors: April 15, 2010 * Final version of accepted papers: May 15, 2010 INTRODUCTION Due to the dramatically increasing amount of available data, effective and scalable solutions for data organization and search are essential. Distributed solutions naturally provide promising alternatives to standard centralized approaches. With the computational power of thousands or millions of computers in clusters or P2P systems, the challenges that arise are manifold, ranging from efficient resource discovery to load balancing issues and distributed query processing. This workshop provides a forum for researchers to define research directions and refine research results the work on distributed information retrieval. We will also encourage submissions of position papers, experiences, software demonstrations and posters in the area of distributed information retrieval. Topics of interest include, but are not limited to: * Novel distributed applications/architectures * Retrieval models for distributed and distributed IR * Heterogeneous distributed data integration and organization * Query routing in distributed environments * Distributed ranking * Distributed index structures * Efficiency and scalability in distributed IR * Multimedia retrieval for distributed IR * Resource discovery * Standards / benchmarks for P2P IR * Grid and parallel IR * Decentralized reputation management * Distributed data provenance computation * Metasearch engines * Tools for distributed IR SUBMISSION Submissions for the special topic issue should be high-quality manuscripts on the theoretical, empirical and methodological issues on large-scale distributed systems for information retrieval. Submissions should describe original research and not be under consideration in any other forum. All submissions should be formatted according to the Information Processing & Management guidelines (http://www.elsevier.com/wps/find/journaldescription.cws_home/244/authorinstructions) for papers, references, and citations and should be submitted using the Elsevier Editorial System for Information Processing and Management (http://www.ees.elsevier.com/ipm/). To ensure that all manuscripts are correctly identified for inclusion into the special issue, it is important that authors select Special Issue: "Large-Scale Distributed IR" when they reach the "Article Type" step in the submission process.
