Special Issue on New Avenues in Search
CALL FOR PAPERS
International Journal of Semantic Web and Information Systems (IJSWIS)
Special Issue on New Avenues in Search
Search is still at the forefront of Web applications, and has meanwhile gained importance
far beyond simple information acquisition. Indeed, search is not only the most frequent
application executed on the Web, it has also found its way into other platforms for
organizing large collections of items or information (e.g., iTunes, file systems). Moreover,
search platforms are the base of online advertising and hence the primary vehicle for
creating revenues for many companies.
It is therefore not surprising that the interest in search as a research topic is still
of increasing interest; this is confirmed, for example, by the large number of search
engines (more than 1,400) observed by Charles Knight for his altsearchengines.com site.
Indeed, the core question of every search engine ("what does the user have in mind when
posing a query?", what is the actual meaning behind a search query?) is still largely
unresolved.
This special IJSWIS issue on New Avenues in Search is intended to capture some of the many
activities currently going on in search that involve or focus on the use of semantic (Web)
techniques and technologies. We therefore welcome papers reporting original research
relevant to the various aspects of search and that have been driven in the direction of the
semantic web, including, but not limited to
- search techniques involving semantic techniques
- search heuristics
- universal search
- computation and search
- personalized and social search
- faceted search
- media search, e.g., in videos and music
- meta-search
- clustering and aggregation in search
- application-specific search, e.g., in digital archives.
