Urban Knowledge extraction from satellite imagery Post-Doc DeadLine: 15/10/2009 jamal.atif@ird.fr http://http://jamal-atif.berbiqui.org/caribsat/postdoc_caribsat_profile.pdf Department: IRD - Unité ESPACE S 140 Location: French Guiana and Martinique Island (French West Indies) Start Date: Immediately Duration: 2 years Salary: Up to 2400 € Context: The IRD (Institut de Recherche pour le Développement) is a French governmental multidisciplinary scientific institute dedicated to studies in tropical contexts. The ESPACE Unit gathers around 40 agents located in Montpellier, France, Caiena, French Guiana, St Denis, La Réunion and Nouméa, New Caledonia. It operates research projects dedicated to the understanding of land cover/use evolution and of environment/societies interrelations using satellite data interpretation and spatial analysis. Area of study: CARIBSAT is a global GIS project for Carribean sustainable development planning. The expected contribution for this position concerns specifically Martinique island urban areas. Description: In the context of the Caribsat Project, a postdoctoral position is immediately available for a highly motivated individual with a strong interest in computer vision, satellite image processing and knowledge representation and reasoning. The project concerns (i) the development of original algorithms for urban extraction and analysis from High resolution satellite imagery, (ii) the study of formal description logics for spatio-temporal analysis of urban patterns. This position requires a Ph.D. in image processing, computer sciences or a related field, with a strong background in applied mathematics. Previous experience in texture analysis, object recognition and/or knowledge engineering would be appreciated.
